What to Expect Days 1-6

Flow or discharge
The beginning of your period (Day 1) kicks off the menstrual cycle. Your period has started and bleeding is here. Towards the beginning and end of your period, you may have some light days when you’re barely bleeding at all, and heavier days during the middle. The color and consistency of the blood can change, and you may notice small dark clumps or clots. You can expect to shed approx 3-8 tablespoons of blood for your entire period.

Physical & Emotional Symptoms
You may experience PMS symptoms during the first few days before your period, which can include: sore and tender breasts, cramps (usually lower stomach, back, or legs), headaches, bloating, acne, cravings/increased appetite, feeling emotional or sensitive, mood changes (crying, anger, difficulty concentrating) feeling tired, increased assertiveness, sharpened senses, increased creativity.

What to Expect Days 7-13

Flow or discharge
During the follicular phase, just after your period ends (days 7-8), discharge is absent or dry. As you approach ovulation, discharge becomes sticky, white, creamy, lotion-y. Just after your period ends (days 7-8), estrogen is just beginning to rise but not enough to create much discharge. In the days leading up to ovulation (around days 9-13), discharge becomes sticky, white, creamy, lotion-y. Estrogen continues to rise and the cervix produces more fluid, which starts to thin out the discharge. Discharge that was sticky or tacky, will become more wet and creamy, like a lotion as the days go on. It may look white, cloudy, or even yellowish (esp when it dries on your underwear).

Physical & Emotional Symptoms
During the late follicular phase leading up to ovulation, you may feel more energetic or better performing at sports.

What to Expect Days 13-15

Flow or discharge
The ovulation phase is when an egg is released from an ovary and when you are most fertile. Discharge during this phase is slippery, wet, clear, and resembles a raw egg white that you can stretch between your thumb and pointer finger and may feel slippery when you wipe yourself. Some may also experience bleeding or spotting around the time they are ovulating.

Physical & Emotional Symptoms
Breast soreness or tenderness, mild pelvic or lower abdominal pain, nausea and headaches, heightened senses.
