A complex system of identities, expressions, and roles that are usually assigned to people based on the appearance of their genitals at birth, for example: woman, man. How gender is represented and defined varies from culture to culture and from person to person. The gender that someone is assigned at birth may be different to their gender identity and/or their gender expression. Gender is different from sex, although they are often confused. Sex is a medical term, describing a set of factors related to the human reproductive system, for example: female, male, intersex.
