{"id":22403,"date":"2023-06-13T17:50:57","date_gmt":"2023-06-13T17:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bloomforall.com\/parent\/?p=22403"},"modified":"2023-06-27T18:03:53","modified_gmt":"2023-06-27T18:03:53","slug":"online-sexual-exploitation-enticement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bloomforall.com\/parent\/online-sexual-exploitation-enticement\/","title":{"rendered":"Protecting Your Young Person From Online Sexual Exploitation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"is-style-cnvs-paragraph-callout has-medium-font-size\">Learn about online enticement, what red flags to look out for, and how to protect your young person against being exploited online.<\/p><p>Online enticement involves an individual communicating with someone believed to be a child via the internet with the intent to commit a sexual offense or abduction.&nbsp;<\/p><p>This is a broad category of online exploitation and includes sextortion, in which a child is being groomed to take sexually explicit images and\/or ultimately meet face-to-face with someone for sexual purposes, or to engage in a sexual conversation online, or in some instances, to sell\/trade the child\u2019s sexual images. This type of victimization takes place across every platform: social media, messaging apps, gaming platforms, etc.&nbsp;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"BLOOM + Kids in The House Present \/\/ Being Manipulated\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nzKwkmXvCtI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>The most common tactics used to entice children seem to be engaging in sexual conversation\/role playing, and asking the child for sexually explicit images of themselves or mutually sharing images. The number of reports increased from 19,100+ to 37,800+ reports.<\/li>\n\n<li>In a NCMEC analysis:<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>78% <\/strong>of reported victims were girls<\/li>\n\n<li><strong>13%<\/strong> were boys<\/li>\n\n<li>In <strong>9%<\/strong> of the reports, gender was unknown<\/li><\/ul><\/li>\n\n<li><strong>98%<\/strong> of reported offenders were seemingly unknown to the child offline.<\/li><\/ul><h2 id=\"red-flags-of-online-enticement\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red Flags of Online Enticement&nbsp;<\/h2><p><strong>The most common tactics to entice children include:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Engaging in sexual conversation\/role-playing as a <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomforall.com\/parent\/grooming-know-the-warning-signs\/\">grooming method<\/a>, rather than a goal.<\/li>\n\n<li>Asking the child for sexually explicit images of themselves or mutually sharing images.<\/li>\n\n<li>Developing a rapport through compliments, discussing shared interests or \u201cliking\u201d their online post, also known as grooming.<\/li><\/ul><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sending or offering sexually explicit images of themselves.<\/li>\n\n<li>Pretending to be younger.<\/li>\n\n<li>Offering an incentive such as a gift card, alcohol, drugs, lodging, transportation, or food.<\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1160\" height=\"387\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red Flags of Sextortion&nbsp;<\/h2><p><strong>&nbsp;Those involved in the sextortion of children often:<\/strong><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Approach a child on social media after using it to learn about the child\u2019s interests, friends, school, family, etc.<\/li>\n\n<li>Intentionally move their communications with the child from one online platform to another (e.g., moving from social media to private video chat or messaging apps)<\/li>\n\n<li>Use tactics to coerce a child, including:<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Reciprocation (\u201cI\u2019ll show you, if you show me\u201d)<\/li>\n\n<li>Initially offering something to the child, such as money or drugs, in exchange for sexually explicit photos\/videos<\/li>\n\n<li>Pretending to work for a modeling agency to obtain sexual images of the child<\/li>\n\n<li>Developing a bond with the child by establishing a friendship\/romantic relationship&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n<li>Secretly recording sexually explicit videos of the child during video chats<\/li>\n\n<li>Physically threatening to hurt or sexually assault the child or the child\u2019s family members<\/li>\n\n<li>Using multiple online identities to contact a child&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n<li>Pretending to be younger and\/or a member of the opposite sex&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n<li>Accessing the child\u2019s online account without authorization and stealing sexual images or videos of the child<\/li>\n\n<li>Threatening to create sexual images or videos of the child using digital-editing tools&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n<li>Threatening to commit suicide if the child does not provide sexual images or videos<\/li>\n\n<li>Saving sexually explicit conversations with the child and threatening to post them online<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1160\" height=\"387\" id=\"how-to-talk-about-online-sexual-exploitation\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Talk About Online Sexual Exploitation<\/h2><p>Children and adolescents may not take the first steps in disclosing to you an uncomfortable online interaction. If during this discussion you hear something that is startling to you, try to react calmly and continue listening. Remember, it is not the child who is at fault. Together you can report the incident to the <a href=\"https:\/\/report.cybertip.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CyberTipline.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"ask-your-young-person\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Your Young Person<\/h4><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Has anyone ever tried talking to you online about inappropriate or sexual things? What did you do?<\/li>\n\n<li>Do you trust all of your online friends? Are there any people you should unfriend or block?<\/li><\/ul><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do you know how to report, flag, or block people on the websites and apps you use? Can you show me?<\/li>\n\n<li>Who would you talk to if you were upset by a request you received online?<\/li><\/ul><h4 id=\"reinforce-boundaries\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reinforce Boundaries<\/h4><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>You have the right to say \u201cNO\u201d to anyone who talks about or asks you to do something that makes you uncomfortable, even if it\u2019s someone you know.<\/li>\n\n<li>Someone who pressures you to talk about or do something sexual online is not someone you should trust.<\/li>\n\n<li>Block, unfriend, or report anyone sending an unwanted sexual request.<\/li>\n\n<li>Talk to a friend or an adult you trust if you get upset about a sexual request. Sometimes just talking about it can help.<\/li>\n\n<li>Be very careful about meeting offline. NCMEC has operated the <a href=\"https:\/\/report.cybertip.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CyberTipline<\/a>, to provide the public and electronic service providers with the ability to report suspected child sexual exploitation, including online enticement of children for sexual acts, extra-familial child sexual molestation, child pornography, child sex tourism, child sex trafficking, unsolicited obscene materials sent to children, misleading domain names, and misleading words or digital images on the internet.
