Sex is often confused with gender, but they are two different things. Sex is a medical term, describing a a set of factors related to the human reproductive system. These include chromosomes, hormones, internal and external sex organs, and secondary sex characteristics like breast tissue or facial hair. At birth, infants are commonly assigned a sex based on the appearance of their genitals. Aside from male and female, there are many different sexes: intersex is an umbrella term for these variations.
