Sarah Sparrow Benes, Ed.D., Ed.M., M.P.H.

Associate Clinical Professor in the School of Health Sciences at Merrimack College

Sarah Sparrow Benes, Ed.D., Ed.M., M.P.H., is an associate clinical professor in the School of Health Sciences at Merrimack College. She is also a partner in Lighthouse Wellness & Health Education Consulting. Dr. Benes received her Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching and her Ed.M. in human movement from Boston University. She went to Boston University from the University of Connecticut where she earned her B.S. in athletic training. She completed a master’s in public health from the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Benes worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer and an assistant athletic trainer at Boston University before transitioning to teaching full time and running the physical and health education programs for 6 years. Dr. Benes’ research interests include skills-based health education, physical activity in the classroom, and enhancing school-based physical and health education programming. Dr. Benes is currently on the board of SHAPE America and has served as chair of the health education council of SHAPE America. She has done curriculum development with many districts in Massachusetts, conducted skills-based health education, professional development, and presentations in multiple states across the country and internationally. She is a co-author of four books and has more than a dozen health education articles and other publications. She currently lives in Massachusetts with her husband, two daughters, and a yellow lab! She enjoys reading, hiking, and going on adventures with her family.

Dr. Benes has co-authored, “The Essentials of Teaching Health Education: Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment,” “Lesson Planning for Skills-Based Health Education: Meeting Secondary-Level National Standards,” and “Lesson Planning for Skills-Based Elementary Health Education: Meeting the National Standards.” Each book offers effective, skills-based learning activities, lessons, units, and assessments for health education that can be used in the classroom as they are or with modifications to meet the needs of the students.
